Experience the prestige of one of the Porvoo’s first stone residence, an architectural landmark built in 1760. Throughout the centuries, "Porvoo Castle" has hosted distinguished guests, from Swedish Kings and Russian Tsars to legendary icons of Finnish rock history.
The so‑called “Porvoo Castle” is one of the most significant buildings in Old Porvoo and the oldest surviving stone house in the city. It was completed in 1760, just before the great fire that destroyed much of Porvoo. The stone building survived almost unharmed, making it a rare and valuable part of the city’s architectural heritage.
Despite its name, the building is not a castle in the military sense. It was originally the sturdy stone residence of a wealthy merchant family. Over the centuries, it served as a home, a trading house and a storage space, welcoming merchants, sailors, officials and members of the clergy. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Porvoo was an important administrative and commercial centre, and the house was likely visited by nobles as well as members of Emperor Alexander I’s entourage during the Diet of Porvoo in 1809.
Today, the building is a historical attraction showcasing the life of Porvoo’s merchant class and the city’s development in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is an essential part of Old Porvoo’s cultural landscape and offers visitors a unique opportunity to step into the atmosphere of past centuries.
